Deputies save man from hanging

PICO RIVERA - A man who attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself off the Rio Hondo Bridge in Montebello was saved by Sheriff's deputies Sunday, authorities said.Deputies from the Pico Rivera Station were dispatched to the bridge at about 5:27 p.m. on Sunday regarding an attempted suicide attempt. Deputies found a male Hispanic adult hanging by his neck on the north side of the bridge. The five deputies pulled the lifeless man up and over the guard rail. As two deputies struggled to remove the makeshift noose from the victim's neck, a third deputy began CPR. Unable to untie the noose, made of a heavy gauge electrical cord, the deputies used a utility knife to cut the cord from the victim's neck, which instantly opened his airway. After about three minutes of CPR, deputies began to see signs of life. The victim was transported to Beverly Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.
