Crime Report: 4/15/20

•On April 6 at approximately 7 p.m., a juvenile female victim was at the Columbia Sports Center Park when she was approached by an unknown juvenile male suspect, who asked to use her phone. The victim gave the suspect her phone and the suspect ran away. 

The victim went home and told her mother and they went out looking for the suspect and located him at Brookshire Park with two other male subjects. They confronted the suspect and he removed a firearm from his front waistband and waved it in the air. The victim and her mother called police and when officers arrived, the suspect and his male companion fled. 

Officers set up a containment and the suspects were caught as they were running through backyards of residences.  One suspect broke his leg after jumping from a fence and was taken to the hospital where he needed surgery. The other male was apprehended as he ran into the Brookshire apartments and tackled to the ground by officers. He was booked for robbery and a replica firearm was recovered from a backyard.

•On April 7 at approximately 6:15 p.m, a group of approximately 100 gathered to the front of Calvary Chapel for their court ordered AA, Domestic Violence, and Anger Management courses that were postponed due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The agitated individuals were denied entry into the church and asked by staff to leave the premises. They refused and Police were requested. Officers ordered the group to leave the property, per the staff's request, and they complied without incident.

•On April 8 at approximately 8:15 a.m., officers responded to the12000 block of Bellflower Blvd. regarding a Death Investigation. An adult male Downey resident was found unresponsive and bleeding from the nose by a family member as they woke. Downey Fire attempted to revive the male but ultimately pronounced him dead. There were no signs of a crime or foul play. Detectives and a forensic technician responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The Coroner's Office responded and took possession of the deceased male.

•On April 9 at approximately 9 a.m.,City staff discovered that unknown suspect(s) removed a lock box from a storage container at the Barbara J. Riley Center, where cases of toilet paper for the city are stored. The suspect(s) stole 4 cases of toilet paper from the container valued at $220. There were no signs of forced entry. This is the second theft from that facility in the past two weeks. Detectives are investigating.

•On April 9 at approximately 5:30 p.m., officers responded to the 8200 block of Firestone Blvd. regarding a found child, a 7-year-old female. Officers were unable to locate her parents and transported her to the station. The juvenile had multiple injuries that appeared to be from abuse and was brought to Downey PIH for medical treatment.  Detectives were notified and handled the investigation. The mother, a Downey resident, later called to report the juvenile missing. The mother and her live-in girlfriend were arrested for felony child abuse. Department of Children and Family Services responded to assist.

•On April 10 at approximately 6 p.m., officers located a felony vehicle that was wanted out of Long Beach. A high-risk traffic stop was conducted at Firestone and Brookshire. Three occupants were detained and Long Beach Police responded to handle the investigation.

•On April 12 at approximately 6:55 p.m., the male adult victim was riding his bicycle in the area of Downey and Florence. The suspect approached the victim and shoved him off the bicycle. The suspect took the victim's bicycle and road away. The suspect was located by officers at Brookshire and Florence and the bicycle was recovered. The male suspect was arrested for robbery.
