College hosting performance by Chinese opera

NORWALK - Cerritos College, in partnership with San Diego State University Confucius Institute and Rio Hondo College, will host a Dagu international cultural performance on March 21.Traditional Chinese operative storytelling and story-singing will be performed by nationally acclaimed Chinese artists, including actress and singer Yang Fengjie; actress and sihu player Wang Hongmin; three-stringed lute player Zheng Liwen; and actor and lute player Xia Yan. The program will consist of performances from traditional and cultural Chinese stories such as the war story "ChangBan Po", the romantic fantasy "Capturing SanLang" and the comedy "Tao Hwa Jian." "These stories are very well-known in China," said Cerritos College trustee Dr. Shin Liu. "The evening will be a great introduction to Chinese culture for anyone who is interested." The program runs about 1 1/2 hours, finishing at about 9 p.m. Traditional tea and tea cookies will be served, compliments of the hosts. The first 100 guests will be eligible to be entered into a free drawing to win one of a variety of food, tea, gift certificates and other prizes. Guests will also have an opportunity to meet the artists following the performance, with a donation requested. Signed photographs from the performers will also be available. All proceeds will help fund international and global awareness education programs at Cerritos College. The performance is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in Lots C-1 and C-10 in white-lined student stalls. Complimentary tickets are available at Cerritos College's Office of Student Activities and also at Rio Hondo College.
