Classic novels among silent auction prizes benefiting library

DOWNEY – Bids are now being accepted for the Friends of the Downey City Library’s monthly silent auction. 

Bids can be placed until May 28 at 12 pm inside the Friends Bookstore located inside the Downey City Library. 

This month’s auction prizes include:

  • A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens. Widely recognized as Dickens’ most esteemed literary work, this timeless classic features a Flexibound edition that is a must-have for any home library. Minimum bid: $10

  • Persuasion, Jane Austen. The last novel fully completed by Jane Austen, this classic was published six months after her death, and is accepted as her most maturely written novel, showing Jane’s refinement of literary conception. Flexibound edition. Minimum bid: $8

  • Emma, Jane Austen. With lively characters and dramatic twists, this classic is a brilliant novel that cleverly explores the constraints of marriage and social status during the early nineteenth century.  Flexibound edition. Minimum bid:  $10

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde. Widely recognized as a philosophical masterpiece in Gothic literature, this 1890 classic presents a twisted take on Victorian morality and controversial topics prevalent during this era. Minimum bid: $8

  • The 500th Anniversary Pictorial Census of the Gutenberg Bible, Don Cleveland Norman.  Numbered copy 503 of 985 limited numbered copies, signed by author, and illustrated with photographs, plates, maps. Binding with gilt pictorial/emblem to front board and gilt titles; comes with matching slipcase. Note: Has personal inscription on the back page. Minimum bid: $150

  • Native Land Native People: From the Edward S. Curtis Collection, Wayne Youngblood. In 1906 Edward Curtis produced a series of books on the North American Indian. This book features over 300 photographs from his inspirational work, paying tribute to the Native Americans he had the honor and privilege to photograph. Minimum bid: $25

  • The Prince & The Pauper, Mark Twain. Mark Twain’s classic tale, and first attempt at historical fiction; a delightful story filled with wit and humor that presents a multidimensional view of social inequality during sixteenth century London. Minimum bid: $8

  • The Complete Work of Raphael, Luisa Becherucci, et al. Eight Italian scholars examine the Renaissance painter's life, artistic activity, and individual paintings, drawings, and architectural projects as well as drawing attention to his poetry and fascination with the history and culture of ancient Rome. Minimum bid:  $30
