City Council candidates submit financial disclosure reports

DOWNEY - City Council candidates have submitted their final financial contribution report before next month’s election.

The following is a breakdown of who funded each campaign (entries that were illegible or unclear are noted as such).

District 1

Despite running unopposed, Councilman Horacio Ortiz reported contributions of $40,901.75 and $28,936.39 in expenditures. He loaned himself $5,100, however has already reimbursed himself.

Ortiz notably received a fair amount of support from local restaurants and their employees, especially from the El Pescador chain of which he and his family are owners. He also received $1,000 each from his council colleagues Mario Trujillo and Dorothy Pemberton, both of whom are also running for reelection.

Pemberton’s opponent, current Planning Commissioner Louis Morales, has reported a single monetary contribution: a $12,000 loan to himself. He is reported to have spent $3,470.80.

District 5

Mayor Mario Trujillo was once again the big raiser and spender of the election season, raising $78,968 and spending $77,798.26. He currently has $10,000 in loans to himself outstanding.

Trujillo received hefty support from the legal community. He was also given funds from Athens Services - which handles Downey’s solid waste disposal – and Southern California Edison.

Councilman Horacio Ortiz – which whom Trujillo contributed to his reelection campaign – also supported the Mayor.

The Mayor’s contributions received included two nonmonetary donations in the form of entertainment and hospitality from Beso Restaurant ($1,800 value) and Google ads and labor from (what appears to be) Braven Agency, Inc ($1,500 value).

Trujillo’s opponents Rudy Sandoval and Joaquin Beltran both submitted 470 forms, indicating that they had raised and spent less than $2,000 on their campaigns in the calendar year.
