Cerritos College’s new theater to debut with ‘I Am Frida Kahlo’

NORWALK – “I Am Frida Kahlo,” an original play written and directed by Cerritos College Spanish professor Froylán Cabuto, will debut Oct. 29 as the first public theatrical performance at the new Cerritos College Performing Arts Center.

“I Am Frida Kahlo” is a stirring surrealist performance that depicts the tumultuous life of one of the most influential female artists of the twentieth century.

The presentation portrays the reincarnation of Frida Kahlo to tell her true story. Death Frida (Frida's alter ego) and Death Diego Rivera take the audience to the world of the living and the dead through expressionist dance.

The original program features live music, dance performances, and digital media elements. The play explores the creative process through which Frida Kahlo developed some of her most outstanding works of art while touching on current social and political issues.

Starring Fernanda Kelly as Frida Kahlo, the play is choreographed by Beatriz Eugenia Vásquez, with original music and musical arrangements by Otto Cifuentes.

Performances are Saturday, Oct. 29, at 8 pm; Sunday, Oct. 30, at 4 pm; Friday, Nov. 4, at 8 pm; and Saturday, Nov. 5, at 8 pm.

Pre-sale tickets are $35. Tickets at the door are $40, plus a $4 ticketing fee.
