DOWNEY -- Retired Downey police officer Jeff Toussieng was honored by the Downey Board of Education last week for his extensive volunteer work with Downey schools and students. 

Toussieng was hired by the Downey Police Department in 1974 as a police aide and became an officer in 1976. During his extensive career he worked as a patrol officer, K9 handler, DARE officer and detective.

After retirement, he was re-hired by the department in 2008 as a part-time IT technician to maintain the cameras and computers in patrol vehicles. 

With his expertise as a lighting technician, electrician and general handyman, Toussieng has volunteered with drama programs at every Downey school. He helps deliver a real theater experience for students, providing state-of-the-art equipment.

"We are not sure where we'd be without him," said Doty Middle School principal Brent Shubin. 

"It's a pleasure to do what I do at the school," said Toussieng. "It's a lot of work, but seeing the parents and students' reactions to the performances is what makes it all worth it." 

Toussieng was presented the school district's Shared Value Award in the area of Relationships and Partnerships. Shubin and Stauffer Middle School principal Alyda Mir made the presentation. 

"Downey Unified would like to thank Mr. Toussieng for all he has done for our students," said D. Mark Morris, vice president of the Board of Education. "His dedication goes above and beyond for our students and we are very lucky to have him as a major part of our drama programs."
