Author to speak in Downey tomorrow
DOWNEY - Award-winning author Lisa See will be the featured speaker at a luncheon and book-signing tomorrow at the Rio Hondo Event Center.Tickets are $25 and include the author talk and a Chinese buffet meal. See is author of the bestselling books, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," "Peony in Love" and "On Gold Mountain." Her latest novel, "Shanghai Girls," tells the story of Pearl and May, two sisters who leave Shanghai to find new lives in 1930s Los Angeles. To settle his gambling debts, their father sells both girls to a wealthy Chinese-American as wives for his sons. The girls find themselves detained on Angel's Island for months and later must keep a secret that could threaten their future. "Lisa's book captures the bond between sisters, the rich detail of pre-World War II Shanghai, and the struggles and joys of the immigrant experience," said City Librarian Nancy Messineo. "At this author event you will have a rare opportunity to hear a gifted author speak and learn more about her own Chinese American family."
