Downey residents lined up early Thursday to be one of the first to shop in the city’s newest addition: an Aldi grocery market.

The market opened at 11215 Lakewood Boulevard - the site of a formerly long-vacated lot – after a grand ceremony and ribbon cutting featuring Aldi staff and Downey City Council members.

This store is the second Aldi market opened in the region within two weeks, following another grand opening in Santa Fe Springs.

This is also Aldi’s most up-to-date and modern store in the country, according to Aldi officials.
Mayor Pro Tem Sean Ashton said that “this was a long time coming.”

“We’re happy to have Aldi here,” said Ashton. “This lot has been underdeveloped for the longest time. It’s good that they’ve come in; they’ve revitalized this area. I expect a lot of good things from Aldi."

John Alvarez, director of operations for Aldi, said that families will be able to stretch their dollar a bit more at Aldi.

“People and families are able to afford these types of products and save anywhere between 30 and 50% on their grocery dollar without sacrificing any of the quality as well,” said Alvarez.
