DOWNEY – Nearly 80 citations were issued for firework-related violations on Independence Day, the Downey Police Department announced.

During the 4th of July holiday, Downey Police issued 78 citations for the possession/lighting of illegal fireworks, according to a statement posted on Downey Police Department’s Facebook page.

DPD says it received 266 calls for service from the hours of 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.

“Respectfully, we’re aware that we were only able to contact a fraction of the individuals that were in possession of illegal fireworks. However, all of our personnel that were working last night (Patrol Officers, Motors, Fireworks Detail, Dispatch, & Forensics), gave maximum effort,” DPD’s statement said.

Other noteworthy calls July 4 included the locating of a carjacked vehicle (belonging to an Uber driver) in which the suspect was arrested, the location of a stolen car in the area of Woodruff and Foster where the driver was arrested without incident, a subject believed to be under the influence of narcotics who was taken into custody after threatening staff at the Taco Bell on Lakewood and Gallatin (suspect attempted to flee upon officer’s arrival), and a serious injury traffic collision on Stewart and Gray Road, between Brookshire and Patton.

The Downey Fire Department did not immediately respond to a request seeking information on its Independence Day activity.
