DOWNEY — The Downey City Council on Tuesday will consider awarding $96,500 to five non-profits as part of its new Community Based Organization funding program.

The council created the fund earlier this year, allocating $100,000 to benefit non-profit organizations that serve Downey residents.

In a report to the city council, parks and recreation director Jason Chacon recommended the council award funding to five applicants:

• $15,000 to the Downey Symphonic Society to fund a summer concert at Furman Park

• $22,500 to Desert Reign Church in support of its food pantry

• $24,000 to Stay Arts for art classes and workshops

• $15,000 to the Whole Child for mental health and housing services

• $20,000 to the 10-20 Club for wellness workshops

Two other non-profits also submitted applications for funding although they were not recommended to be chosen due to the relatively low number of residents that would benefit: Drumming for Your Life, which sought $19,320 for a reading and rhythm program, and L.A. CADA, which wanted $20,000 for homeless services.
