DOWNEY — The 6-year-old boy beaten to death last week was the suspect’s godson, officials said today.

The boy, identified as Dayvon T., died last Thursday after he was taken to a Long Beach hospital.

Prosecutors said the boy was in the care of Tyler D’Shaun Martin Brand, 23, for several days over the holiday break. The boy was allegedly beaten at Brand’s Downey apartment.

Brand faces one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death. If convicted as charged, he faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

Bail was recommended at $2 million.
