Furman Park first to receive 'no smoking' sign
WRITTEN BY :   Eric Pierce

After agreeing last year to prohibit smoking in all Downey parks - except for designated areas - the first "no smoking" sign was installed at Furman Park on Wednesday.

All 12 Downey parks will be outfitted with the signs in the coming weeks, city officials said.

The installation marked an achievement for clean air advocates, most notably the Green Team, a group of environmentally conscious students from Gauldin Elementary.

Smokers who light up outside a park's designated area could receive a $100 fine. The smoking restrictions are also applicable at city-sponsored public events.
