Vasquez is a member of the Recreation and Community Services Commission, having been appointed by Councilman David Gafin.

Vasquez has pulled papers from the city clerk's office, indicating he will try to replace Gafin in District 1 in November.

Other candidates include Michael Murray, owner of Downey Used Cars, and Councilman Luis Marquez, who is vacating his District 5 citywide seat in favor of District 1 (where presumably he would have a better chance of getting reelected).
