Downey firefighters, along with arson units from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, ATF and Downey Police, seized a "large amount" of illegal fireworks today at a home near Samoline Avenue and Phlox Street.

Three suspects were detained, said Jason Patao, public information officer for the Downey Fire Department.

Patao also reminded residents that is only legal to possess "safe and sane" fireworks, and they can only be discharged during approved times on July 4.

Only those authorized through the state fire marshal can sell "safe and sane" fireworks.

This year, 18 non-profit groups have been authorized to sell legal fireworks at temporary stands throughout Downey.
