DOWNEY - Downey students were invited as special guests to the Teen Nick HALO Awards earlier this month, a television special that recognizes teens making a difference in their community.
Members of Downey High School's KIWIN'S club, along with Builders Club students from Griffiths, Sussman and Doty middle schools, were invited to the awards ceremony after they were featured in a video performing a service project at Hollydale Park.
The Downey kids met celebrities and interacted with other teens who are also working to improve their communities.
"After the awards, Downey students were inspired to return to their respective schools and get to work," said Alex Gaytan, a teacher and KIWIN'S Club advisor. "They challenged their fellow club members to create a project that addresses an issue facing our community. These young leaders hope to be nominated for next year's HALO Awards and receive $20,000 to fund a project that they are passionate about."
Nominations for next year's HALO Awards are already being accepted online at teennick.com. Deadline for nominations is Dec. 31.
